Plotychchia is a very shallow link of the flow-through cascade between Dovhe and Krymne. The lake is overgrowing rapidly, and the sapropel accumulated in it exceeds its water volume tenfold.

Lake in detail

  • Part of the flow-through cascade Liutsymyr–Kruhle–Dovhe–Plotychchia–Krymne.
  • In a stage of rapid overgrowth: it holds 549,000 m³ of sapropel against a water volume of only 54,900 m³.
  • The name probably comes from its dominant fish, the roach.
  • The degradation is driven by mineral fertiliser washed off arable land and by the drop in water level caused by drainage works.
  • The official water-management profile attests roach, perch, pike, crucian carp and tench directly.
  • The name “crucian carp” is not resolved to a species, so it is matched to the native crucian carp only with moderate confidence.

Hydrological connections

The Shatsk lakes are not isolated bodies of water but a connected network. Canals cut between the late nineteenth and the mid twentieth century, along with natural channels, redistribute water between the lakes and the rivers.
