Key facts

Zvedynka is a very small wetland lake of Shatsk National Nature Park, joined by channels to Pulemetske. A field survey on 7 November 2023 recorded heavy siltation, marsh vegetation, numerous beaver traces and an important habitat for waterfowl; a separate lake guide also names crucian carp, pike and perch, but without any quantitative survey.

What to know

Lake in detail

  • The park's field survey of 7 November 2023 confirmed an area of about 4 ha, a maximum depth of 3 m and channel connections to Pulemetske.
  • Mosses dominate the shores and shallows, alongside marsh Labrador tea and cranberry.
  • Numerous beaver traces show the animals are actively reshaping the local water regime and the structure of the banks.
  • Between 2004 and 2006, plankton and periphyton samples were taken in Zvedynka as part of an inventory of diatom algae across 21 lakes of the park.
  • The lake-specific guide names crucian carp, pike and perch. The general name “crucian carp” is linked to the native crucian carp with moderate confidence; the source gives neither a control catch nor a species name.
  • The origin of the basin is described inconsistently: a geomorphological study groups Zvedynka with Rytets as alluvial, while the park's 2023 report calls it karst.

Ecological pressures

Heavy siltation and shrinking open water

Accumulating organic sediment and overgrowth reduce the open water, while at the same time forming a valuable marsh habitat for birds and other animals.

Hydrology

Hydrological connections

The Shatsk lakes are not isolated bodies of water but a connected network. Canals cut between the late nineteenth and the mid twentieth century, along with natural channels, redistribute water between the lakes and the rivers.

Channel
Lake Pulemetske

The channel connection was confirmed by the park's field survey in November 2023.
